And Satanists claim abortion as ‘religious ritual’

Recently, several shocking news stories broke in quick succession that warranted this article. It discusses abortion and the enemy behind it, who comes to steal and kill and destroy (John 10:10).

American ‘after school Satan club’ begins

In America, an after-school program sponsored by The Satanic Temple is popping up around the nation. What irresponsible parent would allow their child to attend such things? June Everett, national director of the After School Satan Club,¹ said the following in a TV interview:

“To us, Satan is a symbol … like Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy … A symbol for standing up to tyrannical authority … We don’t believe in a supernatural Satan … we don’t talk about Satanism… we don’t push it on the kids.”²

However, if they don’t talk about Satanism, then why the name? Everett stated Satan for her is a “symbol for standing up to tyrannical authority”. Ultimately, in her mind, this means the Creator of life (the arch nemesis of Satan) who is both concerned with children growing up (Matthew 18) with healthy boundaries, as well as children inside the womb (Psalm 139). A Christian author, John Wilkinson, once famously stated: “One of the artifices of Satan is, to induce men to believe that he does not exist.”³ This quote highlights the danger of denying spiritual wickedness in high places (Ephesians 6:12) leaving many young lives vulnerable to damage and deception.

Satanists push to overturn US pro-life laws so they can enact ‘abortion ritual’

Satanists are pro-abortion and are now claiming exemption from pro-life laws in the US under the guise of their “religious abortion ritual”.⁴ Co-founder of The Satanic Temple, Lucien Greaves—doing a great disservice to his given name, which means “bringer of light”—argues for their cause, saying with regards to their legal action, “We have to play the long game.”⁵ However, organisations with more innocuous-sounding names also don’t seem to have any qualms about murdering unborn children, for example:

• Planned Parenthood selling baby parts
• Planned Parenthood offers abortion gift cards for Christmas

Police arrest pro-life supporter for ‘silent prayer crime’ near closed abortion centre

UK police stopped to ask a woman—standing quietly, on her own—what she was doing there, since apparently they already knew she does not live in the neighbourhood.⁶ She told them “This is an abortion centre”, signalling behind her. They then asked if she was praying,⁷ as if she had committed a ‘thoughtcrime’. George Orwell was way ahead of his time, when he wrote about that in his novel 1984. Although, Daniel was thrown into the lion’s den for prayer (Daniel 6:12); there is nothing new under the sun (Ecclesiastes 1:9). As she did not wish to come along voluntarily with the three constables, they placed her under arrest for failing to comply with the ‘public spaces protection order’, part of a so-called anti-social behaviour act. Yes, dear reader, apparently we need to protect public spaces from this lady who has been behaving ‘anti-socially’ like this for 20 years—the prayer of a righteous person has great power (James 5:16). But the murders that take place in the building nearby (actually closed on the day of her arrest!) supposedly offer ‘health care’! If abortion is health care, then war is peace, freedom is slavery, and ignorance is strength.⁸ See:

‘You will regret it your whole life’

Some might baulk at this, responding that health care is primarily about the pregnant woman rather than the baby. We do not know each woman’s story and what goes on leading up to an abortion. We would not wish to condemn anyone—however, it is hard to sympathise, for example, with a woman who seemingly uses abortion as contraception and has had up to eight abortions throughout her life.⁹ What, if any, are the effects of having an (or multiple) abortion(s)? The damage is not only physical, but emotional as well. Pussycat Dolls singer Kaya Jones had three abortions, for different reasons—birth control failed, pressured to ‘get rid of it’, and raped by an ex (even though initially she wanted to keep the baby).¹⁰ Her life turned around and she went from being a bit of a rebel to bowing the knee to Jesus—although the regret of those abortions she will carry with her for the rest of her life. Other great conversion stories exist, but not often told:

Biblical hope and healing

People are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). Even before we are born, humans are precious in the sight of God (Jeremiah 1:5). Life starts at conception (Psalm 51:5), thus any abortion is an act to end that life in the womb. The secular alternative to this biblical view does not entertain such black and white terms and definitions, nor does it accept that people have more intrinsic value than, say, an ape or some other creature. The worldview that one adheres to affects the way unborn babies are valued, or not. Within the secular (evolutionary based) worldview they are considered ‘lumps of cells’ (as all of our bodies are, ultimately) that can be disposed of—once, twice, or as many times as deemed necessary.

Events in the past cannot be undone, but we can alter course in the present, and head for a better future. There is a King who will make all things new. He can help, because He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. He will give from the spring of the water of life without payment (Revelation 21:5–6). He is willing to forgive, and able to heal, if only people would come to Him (2 Chronicles 7:14; Psalm 103).

[Update, 7 Feb: Prosecutors have since dropped the charges against the woman (for now).¹¹ Nevertheless, she plans to pursue a verdict in court regarding her charges—not least to obtain legal certainty for herself, but presumably also to find out whether we have indeed entered an era where Christians will face the Orwellian Thinkpol (thought police).]

[Update, 16 Feb: Isabel Vaughan-Spruce, together with Roman Catholic clergyman Sean Gough (who was later arrested for praying for free speech at a Birmingham abortion clinic), have been cleared of four criminal charges in separate court hearings.¹²]

[Update, 21 July: In a separate case, a former soldier, who “served in Afghanistan to defend democratic freedom”, would not pay a fine for praying silently near an abortion centre in Bournemouth, UK.¹³ He further said, “It isn’t for the authorities to determine the contents of my thoughts”. After being made to wait six months for the verdict on his case, he has now been cleared of any charge.]
